IT Consulting as a Career

Why IT Consulting as a career?

We at Polar Cape have provided IT Consulting services to businesses internationally for more than 13 years. Our consultants love doing what they do, and this is one of the things that make them good at it. So, after several chats with them, we have chosen to discuss the topic of IT Consulting from two perspectives: for both someone looking to make a career as an IT Consultant, and in our next blog post, for a company that is considering to acquire a digital partner. We will hear from our CEO Simon Forshaw who has been in the industry his entire career. Simon talks about his own motives for becoming an IT Consultant in the first place and about how we make sure to have happy consultants at Polar Cape.

Variety of Work

As you will see in our chat with Simon (video below), he describes not being able to imagine being tied to one thing only. One company, one technology, doing the same thing over and over. This is a very common argument that an IT Consultant will make when asked why they do what they do – the argument of broad scope of work. Working on a variety of projects helps you build a broad and more diverse knowledge base. As an IT Consultant you face different challenges in each upcoming project. You would most likely be part of different projects, in different industries, for different companies, for several months at a time.

Different Technologies

The same thing goes for being able to work with different technologies. This is very common at Polar Cape. We have multiple clients who benefit from the broad scope of knowledge of our consultants. Even if they are using the services of one of our consultants, they still get to enjoy the expertise of the entire company.

Being here is like swimming in a large pool of knowledge. Our consultants love to share what they know with each other, and this is part of our company culture. We offer our consultants a chance to expand their knowledge and change the technology they work in. And they are always surrounded by colleagues who have been where they are now and are willing to help them advance in their career by sharing their own journey.

The same goes for broadness of industries. A positive aspect of it is that even if you build your experience in one industry, you are able to build a similar approach and learn to apply it in the next one. It truly allows you to master your skills and expand what you know in every possible way. Which brings us to the final point.

Working with Talented People

When you are an IT consultant, you get to be in a thriving environment because you get to work with really talented people. A common practice in the IT industry is to turn to external consultants when dealing with challenging problems. This makes IT Consultants rich in experience. Most of the people you’d be surrounded by as an IT Consultant would come from a wide variety of backgrounds (and again, this applies to both technologies and industries). All in all, it creates a great setting in which employees can learn from one another and further develop their skills and experience.
