Telenor –Transformation from legacy BSS to modern Java Architecture

Background

Telenor’s complex legacy architecture in the BSS domain was not delivering the desired time-to-market so an ambitious transformation program was initiated.

Challenge

The transformation would cover an architecture transformation to modern Java best practices including microservices and continuous integration, using a domain based approach and multiple teams. At the same time an organisational shift towards SAFe, and a merging of product domains.

Solution/Results

Telenor turned to Polar Cape to provide two agile software development teams.  The teams included senior developers, as well as an agile team lead, solution architect, and product owner, all from Polar Cape.  The technology was Java and specifically Spring and hibernate, using microservices, docker containers, and Jenkins for continuous integration.  Polar Cape’s teams took responsibility for two domains, integrating to the rest of the agile organisation using SAFe methodology. This means that multiple teams could work in parallel towards the same long term goals, using quarterly planning, then breaking activities down on the team level.  Polar Cape was also responsible for scoping the and prioritizing the backlog using product owners for stakeholder communication.

”This is an exciting an ambitious initiative from Telenor and we are proud to be a part of their journey”, says Simon Forshaw, CEO at Polarcape. ”We have worked with Telenor for more than eight years and were very happy to gain their trust to put two full squads in place, giving Telenor the ability to focus on their program goals while we take full responsibility to create high performance teams. This is one of our most exciting projects both in terms of what we’re developing, the agile team delivery model, and the way we integrate our development with Telenor’s team.”
